How it actually went

No growth story, no overnight success. Just an expensive lesson and a lot of reading.

1. The idea

   A working professional with a Dutch dream

   Years into my career, I kept coming back to the same idea: build a working life in the Netherlands. Not a holiday. A life — an apartment, a bike, a Monday morning commute along a canal.

2. €500

   The first consultant

   Confident website. Confident call. €500 gone. What I got back was a CV template and the advice to "keep applying". No answer to the only question that mattered: could I actually qualify?

3. €250

   The second consultant

   I assumed the first one was the exception. Another €250, another round of vague optimism. €750 spent in total, and I was no closer to a Dutch job than the day I started.

4. Then

   I read the rules myself

   The IND publishes everything: the highly skilled migrant salary thresholds, the age tiers, the reduced criterion for recent graduates, the public register of recognised sponsors. It took weeks of evenings — but it was all there, for free, the whole time.

5. The turn

   The offer, and the permit

   Knowing the exact threshold changed how I searched, who I applied to, and how I negotiated. That clarity is what led to my own opportunity in the Netherlands, on a highly skilled migrant permit.

6. Today
